The 2020 Metro Jackson Race for the Cure will be held virtually, rather than in-person this year, Susan G. Komen Memphis-MidSouth Mississippi announced Tuesday, June 30.

Originally planned for April 25, 2020 in downtown Jackson at the Old Capitol War Memorial, the event will now take place on October 3, 2020 with a virtual platform.

“As an organization dedicated to saving lives, it is so important to protect the health of our participants, many of whom are breast cancer survivors or are currently in treatment for the disease,” the organization announced in a release. “Therefore, we will be leveraging technology this year to ensure we can race together even if we can’t be together because breast cancer is not cancelled.”

Race for the Cure is an important fundraiser that fuels Komen Memphis/Mississippi local health care grants, educational programs, breast cancer research and patient support efforts, and it also provides those touched by breast cancer a sense of being a part of a large community committed to making a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

“We believe we can preserve the sense of community through this new virtual race even though we will be racing where we are,” said Elaine Hare, CEO of Komen Memphis-MidSouth Mississippi. “The added benefit of this new virtual experience is that people who previously couldn’t attend in person due to their health or scheduling conflicts, will now be able to participate and be part of the community of hope.”
